In a couple of recent posts, I’ve mentioned the nine college interns from UNH who have been working for Careerealism.com throughout their fall semester.

What many people don’t know is that these students not only had to go through a pretty rigorous application process that involved submitting short essays to ten multi-part questions, they also had to survive a group interview with a panel of their peers – just so they could land the opportunity to work 8-10 hours/week without pay. Yep – no cash. Instead, they got paid with Read more

Fear has a grip on many workers today. 500K+ jobs were lost in November. We’d be fools not to experience some initial anxiety over what we see in the news. However, Berns says hanging on to fear not a good thing for our careers: Read more

10,000 Hour Rule: Why Young Workers Struggle after College (and why some seasoned professionals do too!)

December 3, 2008 by sparktalk · View Comments

By J.T. O’Donnell

The popular business author seen here, Malcolm Gladwell (wrote The Tipping Point and Blink), has a new book out that explains how professional success may not just depend on intelligence and talent. In Outlers: The Story of Success, Gladwell argues that it is how one takes advantage of a particular opportunity, at a particular time in history, can be the real deciding factor. In fact, he shares a compelling story of Bill Gates and how his private school’s access to the latest computer technology allowed him to learn computer programming at a faster rate, ultimately, enabling Gates to put thousands of hours of programming under his belt as a teenager. Gladwell says this series of events was the real catalyst for Gates’ success. To validate his theory, he also notes that several other titans of the PC revolution were born around the same time as Gates and had similar advantages. Coincidence? Nope. I’m with Gladwell – talent and intelligence can only you get you so far. After that, other factors come into play, like what Gladstone refers to as the ‘10,000 Hour Rule.’ Read more
