March 31, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

Dear Experts,

My best friend of 10 years just got let go. They told her it was for performance and attitude. I think she is very funny, but does have the kind of sense of humor that I could see being annoying and possible offensive to people who don’t know her as well as I do.

She applied for a job and got interviewed. Now, she wants me to be her reference and rave about her. I’m struggling with this. Of course I want her to get hired, but we work in the same industry, so I don’t want my reputation to get ruined. Read more

T.A.P. Q#51 – Would You List Concealed Weapons Permit On Resume?

March 30, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

Dear Experts,

Last summer, I was teaching a public relations writing class. As we covered resume writing and business letter writing, the students were asking what skills, talents, and abilities they should list on the resume. One student in the class had a concealed weapons permit; he thought that this ability to carry should be listed on his resume. I was dumbfounded. I told the student that he should tailor his resume to the appropriate audience. Honestly, is this something a student should put on a resume? I am curious to read what anyone has to say about this. A+A+O = 3 Elements to Hanging on to Your Job

March 29, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

By Johnathan Flanagan

In past recessions, many companies were hesitant to lay off white-collar or specialized workers, the prevailing wisdom being that the vacancies these layoffs created would hamper corporate growth once economic times were less dismal.
