T.A.P. Q#105 – Other New Girl is Stealing the Show – What Can I Do?

April 30, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

Dear Experts,

I got hired recently for a position after beating out 100 candidates. It was my dream job and I was so excited to start. The first two weeks were great. It’s a small office and I’m a bit shy, so I was really happy to see myself fitting in with the team. And then, things changed…

The company is growing so fast they decided to hire a second person for the same position I have. In fact, they hired the runner-up for my spot. She’s not as qualified as me, but she has a very outgoing, sweet personality (think cheerleader in a business suit). Well, everyone LOVES her. I’m not kidding, one exec just said this week, “I LOVE this girl!” when she presented him with her work. This is very frustrating to me. I’m more low-key, and yet, it seems like her personality is landing her more attention and respect. I’m worried my more conservative nature is going to make me the odd-one-out.

Any suggestions?

T.A.P. Q#103 – Best Advice for Entering A New Industry? How Can I Get Their Attention?

April 29, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

Dear Experts,

What’s the best advice for a job seeker to re-position for a new industry?

Given that job seekers are limited by an inflated labor market, shortage of jobs and collapse of certain industries, many are forced and very willing to consider taking a step or two down in position title to rebuild a career in a different sector.  What are some good ways recruiters can help their candidates capture the attention of hiring managers in a cover letter and resume to avoid being dismissed as both overqualified in job level and underexperienced in industry?  How also can candidates be better prepared to convey commitment and mitigate the justifiably perceived risk that, if hired, they will turn and jump ship if they are not promoted quickly enough, or a higher level / higher paying position becomes available elsewhere, or when the failing industry that they’re leaving turns around? Or is it a bad practice to take a risk on such candidates?

T.A.P. Q#102 – How Much Is Too Much Follow Up?

April 29, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

Hi T.A.P. Experts,

I recently had a second round interview with a large company for a position that I am very interested in. During the second interview, the HR person mentioned that they hiring process might slow down a bit because they were considering internal promotions. After my interview the HR contact left for vacation. Once she returned, I followed-up via e-mail (I also sent written thank you notes the day after the interview). The HR manager responded to my e-mail and said she would know more next week. Next week came and went and I didn’t hear anything. I waited a few extra days and then followed-up with a voicemail. She has not responded since.

When/how should I follow-up again? How many times and how often can you follow-up with someone? Do HR Managers ever feel like you stalking them?

T.A.P. Q#101 – The Person I Recommended for the Job Just Backed Out…What Should I Say to My Boss?

April 28, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments

Dear Experts,

A person I worked with at a previous company reached out to me about a job opening at my current firm. I enjoyed working with her in the past and she’s very good at what she does, so I recommended her to my boss. Well, she did great in the interview and got offered the job on-the-spot, which she accepted. She was supposed to start the job tomorrow, but just e-mailed my boss, with me cc’d on it explaining that she has to decline the offer and is taking a different job that is better suited for her. I’m working remotely today (thank goodness) , and have no idea what to say to my boss. Do you think he’ll blame me? My boss stopped looking for candidates and canceled interviews after he offered her the job, now he is going to have to start all over.

What should I do?

Is it appropriate to email a job poster to ask what the salary range is for a posted job? I don’t want to waste my time applying and interviewing if the salary’s too low.

By J.T. O’Donnell

For those of you that don’t ‘tweet’ – let me tell you the #1 thing you are missing out on: generosity. Twitter is the most giving community I’ve ever experienced. Yes, there are spammers and unsavory folks who are trying to make a quick buck, but get past that, do your homework on the right way to use Twitter and you can enter a world that, until now, has only been dreamed of. Let me explain…. Read more
