How do you compensate on your résumé for a gap in employment? Naturally hiring managers want to see consistency; they want to see a professional history that does not contain gaps. Things happen though; there are personal and professional situations that sometimes come up – things that are beyond your control. So, what do you do if you have a gap on the résumé? You probably won’t have the opportunity to explain it, especially if you have applied online or are submitting career documents via web-based or other anonymous means. How do you present yourself in a compelling manner even with the gap? Read more

Suppose you were out having lunch with a new business acquaintance and when your food was delivered to the table, your lunch partner reached over with her hand and sampled your meal. What would you think? That they were rude – lacking proper social etiquette, right? You’d be offended and probably lose your appetite. Besides ranking their social grace at zero, you’d also seriously question their professional competence as well.
The example I shared above is extreme. But here’s the point: Read more

September 29, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments
Dear Experts,
Do employers consider internship experience to be part of one’s professional experience? I have nearly 2 years of professional experience, which includes 6 months as a full-time, paid intern. Would I meet most employers requirements of having 2 years experience in a particular field?

T.A.P. Q#310 – Don’t Like Degree, Should I Go Back to School?
September 29, 2009 by sparktalk · View Comments
Dear Experts,
I am a 2008 graduate with a degree in Sport Studies, Marketing. I thought working with sports/marketing was my dream job however I have only come to realize its far from it. I truly have developed a passion for working with children throughout many years of coaching gymnastics as well as working in local school districts after my recent experiences in a business setting. I can’t stand sitting in front of a computer 9-5 and all that comes with being in an office.
Thoughts about graduate school are constantly racing through my mind to go back for teaching. However, it is hard to commit because it is a long process all over again and a rather large step when I am feeling so confused about all the options I have. I don’t know what to focus on. Education? Occupational therapy in a school setting? Also, where do I attend school and how do I afford living?
Any ideas on where to begin would be appreciated.

Who hasn’t gone on vacation to mourn leaving and say, “I wish I could live here…let’s not go back!” Well, as my husband would say that is unemployment, not vacation. A valid point, I think.
That having been said if you do have a regular vacation site and do have a sincere desire to relocate to that area, it is possible. Read more
