T.A.P. Q#431 – Best Way to Cold Call?

February 4, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

What is the best way to cold call?

I have a target city and I’ve found many of the software companies. I am now going through and researching them more thoroughly to see if they are a good fit for me. Sometimes they don’t list tech writers as positions they want and sometimes they do. I’ve found companies still don’t really understand the purpose of a tech writer.

How do I educate without talking down and criticizing, plus ask for a job?

T.A.P. Q#430 – Proper Twitter Usage for Job Search?

February 3, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

If I am supposed to be wary about what I post on my social media accounts when I’m looking for a new job, what should my Twitter strategy be? I’ve read in numerous places I should maximize my job search resources by using social media.

Given the above question, how should I let my Twitter followers know I’m looking for a new job? How should I display my qualifications?

T.A.P. Q#429 – I’m the Best Employee, So Why Don’t I Get the Best Pay?

February 2, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

My question is simple. Why would management not give me good pay despite me being the best employee (unofficially confirmed by the bosses).

Recently our Business Development Director came in and saw the way I handled my work and appreciated it a lot. In his words, “I have never seen anything so well maintained in my twenty years of experience in Europe, I am very pleased to see the way you work and it’s a pleasure to have you our team.”

Now the problem is, I have been asking my boss to give me family status. This includes better housing and transportation allowance and for insurance for all the members of the family (my wife for now, we are expecting our first born in April). But my boss has always been negative on that front. The bigger problem is others who are less productive than me are being offered ridiculous benefits, including a pay 30% – 50% better than I. Of course, I would like to have those benefits even if others weren’t getting it.

Could you please tell me how I could make them give me those perks? Please note I have asked the Country Manager, “Sir, is there anything I could do more? So the company can benefit me too?” All he said was, “Hussain, you are doing it and what you are doing is very good, just keep it going.” He didn’t answer me why the company was not giving me the benefits I deserve.

T.A.P. Q#428 – Will Bad Credit & DUI Keep Me From Getting a Job?

February 1, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

I had the interview today, at a major publisher. The HR person requested I fill out a form, that included a blank for my driver’s license number. I wrote down my driver’s license number.

I think the interview went well, although it’s really hard to tell. I met with the HR person, and two other people (not HR).

My concern is what might happen if they perform a background check.

First of all, like millions of Americans, I’ve been out of work for several months. It’s difficult and sometimes impossible to pay bills on time. I have bad credit. Will that stop me from getting a job?

Also, in 2007 I unfortunately got a DUI. The police in my area are very strict, and I have an otherwise perfectly clean driving record. The police are so strict in my state some people have moved out of the state, because they lost their driving privilege (I still drive and have an otherwise clean record).

My question is, can those two things: bad credit and DUI from 3 years ago, keep me from getting a job? A former President of the U.S. had a DUI.

T.A.P. Q#427 – Do I Talk to Co-Worker or Go Straight to Boss?

January 29, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

I work in an organization where teamwork is imperative and our compensation as a group depends on it. One of my co-workers isn’t working hard enough. She socializes too much and doesn’t take the work as seriously as the rest of us.

I want to arrange a meeting with my boss to discuss the situation. However, I’m not sure if I’d be better off talking to my co-worker first.

I just want to make my opinion heard by the right people so we can maximize productivity. And, I want to do it without causing workplace drama. Any advice?

T.A.P. Q#426 – Can’t Get My Resume to Fit on One Page

January 28, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

I’ve tried everything! No matter how I edit my resume, the information carries longer than one page. I have a lot of relevant job experience for the position I’m applying for so I want to make sure I showcase all of it.

Do you have any advice for things I could leave out to secure a one page resume? Is it okay for my resume to carry to another page?

Should I use all the job boards available online? Does it increase my chances? Or, is it better to focus on just a few?

T.A.P. Q#424 – How Do I Re-define My Future With Such a Specific Degree?

January 26, 2010 by sparktalk · Comments

Dear Experts,

I got my B.S. in Biology (concentration in Neurobiology) and went into research in the world of academia after graduation. Three years later I’m still at the same job and I’m burnt out! My original plans of going to graduate school to pursue a PhD in Neuroscience now only exhaust me. My P.I. has worked me to the bone, and often compliments me on how I’m functioning at the level of a graduate student about to defend her thesis…but I’m not. What does one do with such a specific degree and also how I do I re-define my future? Now what?!

I’ve always had the idea of dentistry as a profession in my mind, but I fear my undergraduate record will only lead to rejection.
