The Best Interview Tips For Any Job

Getting a job interview puts you one step closer to the job you want, and yet the smallest details can make or break your chances of getting your foot in the door. Whether you're interviewing for an administrative assistant job or for a CEO position, keep these all-important details in mind for a succesful interview that will put you at the top of the list. Here are the best interview tips for any job:

What You Wear Matters

Regardless of the position you are interviewing for, dress for success. Even if you're applying for a job as a gardener, don't show up to the interview wearing shorts, flip flops and a tank top. Potential employers want to know you know how to dress appropriately, and wearing a tie or a nice dress to the interview will show them you have respect for them and the position you're hoping to get.

Know How To Shake Hands

Always offer your right hand when first meeting your interviewer. When shaking hands, grasp the other's hand firmly, but not too hard, and give it a good shake. Keep your wrist solid rather than limp, and shake with your whole hand, not just your fingers. Lean forward and make eye contact. As you're shaking, say, "It's nice to meet you," or "It's good to see you again."

Speak Positive Body Language

You want to appear to your potential employer as a respectful, self-confident, intelligent candidate for the job. Your body language should exude confidence and openness rather than laziness and carelessness. Sit up straight, with your shoulders back and your chin up. Keep your arms at your sides and your hands folded in your lap rather than folded across you, which signals distrust and defensiveness. When you're answering questions, look your interviewer in the eye to show you're honest. Smile often, gesture with your hands and show enthusiasm with your body language.

Avoid Slang

No matter how you talk to your friends or co-workers, always use proper English in a job interview. Never say, "what's up?" or "How's it going?" when meeting your interviewer. Always say, "It's nice to meet you." Avoid vague catch-all terms like "stuff" and "things," opting instead for specific details.

Have a Question For Your Interviewer

Interviewers almost always ask if you have any questions. Think ahead of time and come up with one or two questions that shows you've done your research. Asking questions helps an interviewer gauge your interest in the position. However, never ask questions such as "How much will I make" or "How much vacation will I get?" Rather, ask questions that help showcase your talents, such as "What kinds of technology will I have access to in order to help me do this job well?" or, "How does the staff work together to make things run smoothly?" Always be yourself in a job interview. Put yourself in the place of the interviewer and think about what kinds of things you would want to hear and see from a potential employee, then follow your instincts and show the prospective employer why you're the best candidate for the job.
