5 Myths About Job Searching

By

Myths

1. The Smartest Person Always Gets The Job

Definitely not true – companies these days are more interested in the complete worker. Having brains is always an advantage, but it’s not the only thing that hiring managers are looking for.

In today’s economy, an employer wants to know that, if required, you are able to complete a wide range of jobs. Having transferable skills, a can do attitude and a willingness to learn and be involved in all aspects of the business is key to nailing the job interview.

2. Direct Experience Is Most Important

Transferable skills are key. In certain industries the job specification may require direct experience, but in many circumstances being able to show that you have the skills to succeed is just as important.

Do not get discouraged if you feel that you lack the right skills to get a new job. Concentrate on the value added skills that you have and highlight these skills on your resume and in the job interview.

3. Dating A Co-Worker Will Lead To Career Doom

An urban myth. I have even heard of stories where dating the boss has resulted in career success (not recommended!). Always remember to perform your role to the highest quality and it does not matter who you decide to date! (Note – public displays of affection are a big no-no! – this type of behavior is best saved for non-work hours).

4. Applying For Jobs Online Is The Only Way To Find A New Job

Job searching online is one of many different approaches you should take. Before you even begin to apply for jobs, ensure that you have a professionally written resume.

No matter how many jobs you apply for, it doesn’t matter if your resume is not selling your skills. With the growth of social networking online, sites such as LinkedIn can be a fantastic way to approach people who you typically could not just pick up the phone and call.

5. Writing A Cover Letter Is A Waste Of Time

Every time you apply for a job you should accompany your resume with a targeted cover letter. The only exception is when the job specification clearly states not to send a cover letter.

Most times, a hiring manager will read your cover letter before opening your resume. If your cover letter does not shine, there is a good chance your resume won’t even be opened. You may have the greatest resume written by a professional resume writer, but it means nothing if your cover letter is letting you down.

Wow, his quality blogging is worth more than a school teacher’s or nurse’s work in a year? Go ahead and tack on police officer, fire fighter, EMT’s to the long list of Georgia workers who make less than this well connected author.

Hey Doofus, you heard of Dice.com or Monster.com…

Well Nathan ‘Lets Make A’ Deal has a 31% approval rating and it makes you wonder how long term you current sittuation will last after 2014.

It’ll probably be long enough to merit a huge pension; you gotta look at the big(pig) picture, like these guys do.

I guess it is nice to be Governor Nathan ‘Lets Make A’ Deal’s ‘boy’.

Jawja you are probably correct we will be paying this bozo’s pension long after this his stint as a summer intern at GPB. As I said before the man has no pride or honor…

Amazing GPB is paying $150,000 a year to Chip Rogers for the job a summer intern could and should be doing.

Maybe the executive management team at GPB also needs to be held accountable for this fiasco.

The gal who quit, when she learned Rogers was making three times her salary, should file an EEOC complaint. She could argue gender discrimination — hiring a less qualified man and paying him more.

“The smartest person always gets the job.” Chip Rogers knows firsthand that this is a myth!

Yeah, we all know it wasn’t the brains; wonder how many chocolate bars chip sent Nathan?

Wow…..A link to a website. THIS is what you’re paying this guy to do. Total waste of taxpayer money. I could do this job for a third the cost.

Yep, as a retired old lady with achy bones, I’d pass on the Youtube videos for $5000 yr. I could write much more entertaining captions.

So sad the powers-that-be at GPB didn’t have the guts to stand up to the Governor and reject this appointment. As a retired state employee I feel so sorry for the other hard-working, qualified professionals at GPB who are overworked and underpaid and have to put up with this nonsense.

Rogers fails to point out in his post, which is just three sentences long, that getting the job is all about who you know (and who you are embarrassing)http://ruralandprogressive.org/chip-rogers-debunks-hiring-myths-on-gpb-blog/

Katherine, I am sure 150,000 a year jobs fall off tress for a former disgraced state senator. In the end, I find it ridiculous he doesn’t discuss interpersonal realtionship skills as a key for an individual’s job search.

In the case whay Chip Rogers is getting paid to do at GPB a summer intern could more than handle and be paid significantly less.

This man has no self respect…

Absolute outrage. Is there no shame left in the political arena? I don’t know how you can justify giving Chip Rogers a cushy job at a top-rate pay. If I were an employee of GPB I would be seriously pi**ed that an ex-legislature had a highly paid position carved out for him to do what? Create a blog that a high school student could do for free. If Chip Rogers had any respect for the people of Georgia, his fellow employees at GBP, and for himself, he would resign immediately.

You hit it, Kathleen. No respect for the people of Georgia, and no shame.

      Kathleen, I agree…

Current politicians are all about ‘givernment’. What government can do them instead of what government can do for the people.

Chip Rogers you absolutely disgust me.

    February 28, 2013 at 9:57 AM

Wow, this is what we get for $150,000 a year. Excuse me why don;t we just get HR managers to have a running discussion about the current and future job markets and its challenges instead of this.

    February 28, 2013 at 9:49 AM

You forgot the most important one…who you know.

This is best demonstrated in your case where your friends and associates created a job for you to move you out of a public debacle.

  12. Laurie

    February 28, 2013 at 9:43 AM

#2 is also wrong when you have friends in high places that are willing to create a position just for you, that pays higher than anyone else in the company!

  13. Scott T.

    February 27, 2013 at 5:39 AM

With all due respect, #2 is just dead wrong. Companies have slashed training budgets and are not looking to bring in someone who may be able to do the job in a few months. All the data from employers shows that they want to make hires who already know how to do the job. That’s why there is so much talk about a skills gap.

      February 28, 2013 at 9:42 AM

You are right Scott. Wonder how I can get a cushy job like Chip Rogers who writes 2 lines and attaches someone else’s article for the actual work – although not a very good source…still a pretty good deal – oh, that’s it, DEAL got him his job!!!

Nice to know a career politician is giving advice on how to find a job.

      • tom

        February 28, 2013 at 9:59 AM

So how is it a former state senator lands a cushy job writing about finding a job?

        • JAWJA

          March 4, 2013 at 3:01 PM

Well, he’s not REALLY writing, just captions. In our hearts we already knew writing/radio/playing well with others was not his forte. Wait until the national media hears about the Chocolate Bar Resume and Sell stuff online. That’s sure to pull a TON of jobs to Georgia. Chip’s already nationally famous for his mind control thingy. You think he got into Nathan’s mind is how he got the job?
