T.A.P. Q#366 – I’m In the Wrong Major

November 10, 2009 by sparktalk

Dear Experts,

It’s my senior year of college and I’ve finally realized what I want to do in life: be a teacher. The only problem is, I’ve been declared as a Mechanical Engineer since my freshman year. It’s obviously way too late to change my major. What in the world do I do?

Got a career question you’d like answered? Send it to twitter@careerealism.com along with your Twitter account name (you must use Twitter for us to post your question).

Here is how our CAREEREALISM-Approved Experts answered this question on Twitter:

Q#366 Why not teach mech engineering? You could tutor students on afternoons/weekends, too. All is not lost. (@beneubanks)

Q#366 Take ed course next semester. Research reqs for teaching; ME w/teaching certificate can teach science. (@juliaerickson)

Q#366 Do some research and find out what you need to do to get into teacher’s college. Then, make a plan to move forward. (@gradversity)

Q#366 Need MS to teach, so, no big deal. BUT, don’t throw out ME career yet. Do 5 info interviews in field 1st. (@jtodonnell)

  • Teaching is something that you need a graduate degree and a certification to go into. I don't think there's anything stopping you from doing that, you'll just need more school, which you would need anyway.
