In this job market, there are two types of candidates to hiring managers: Must-haves and Nice-to-haves.
The question is: Which one are you?
This video shares my recent conversation with a “nice-to-have” job seeker who’s been unemployed for quite some time…

5 Alternatives to Pulling a Stephen Slater

I cringe when I see the attention Stephen Slater is getting for his in-your-face exit from Jet Blue. It used to be that any publicity was good publicity. However, in a time where long memories get longer (thank social media and the permanence of everything posted on-line), I can tell you most traditional employers won’t touch him with a 10-foot pole. Even if he gets a TV show or other offers, his fifteen minutes of fame will die, and all those supportive fans will drop off like flies. When the attention dies, he could start to act desperate – and hiring managers don’t like desperate.
That being said, if you are one of the millions of Americans who want to sing, “Take this job and shove it!” to your employer, I’d like to offer you 5 reputation-saving alternatives: Read more

I’ve been in the career coaching business for 9+ years. Prior to that, I was in the HR/staffing industry. I’ve met all kinds of career coaches. Some are truly exceptional. Others are okay. Then, there are always the few who give our profession a bad name.

I recently joined forces with Monster.com’s social networking division to write a weekly Q&A column called, “Ask the Career Expert,” for their on-line community, Excelle (a professional resource for career-minded young women).
My first question was asked by a job seeker who felt she needed ‘spice up’ her resume. Read here if you want to learn why I told her to make her resume more like a food label….
Or, you can watch the short video advice clip I produced below. Either way, you learn the secret to a resume that doesn’t just get read, it gets put in the shopping cart!

Our first Am I Money winner is Jennifer M. She sent us a great summary of all she’s been doing to find a new job. She’s been working hard – I was impressed! I did find one thing missing from her brand though…she wasn’t answering the question, “What are you looking for in your next job?” in a way that showcased she was MONEY! Read more

About a week ago, I learned Oprah is holding a contest to find a new talk show host for her network. Already, hundreds of Americans have submitted their 3-minute video auditions explaining what kind of talk show they want to have and why they’d make a great host.
As soon as I read it, one thought came to mind: Read more
TELL US: BEST & WORST Career Advice You Got This Year?

One of the best parts of my job is writing a weekly advice column with Dale Dauten. Our column goes out each week to millions of hard-working Americans, many of whom write to us. It’s a very interesting job because we get to see what’s really happening in the workplace.
As you can imagine, the number of unemployed folks reading our column has jumped quite a bit in the last two years. I am seeing a lot more questions submitted to us around how to find work as opposed to how to deal with work. That’s why I’m reaching out to all of you…
We’ve Decided to Do Something Special
Dale and I are working on a ‘top secret ‘project right now that is designed to help Americans cope with the jobless recovery. What’s a jobless recovery? It’s when the economy starts to come out of a recession but we don’t see job creation keep up with it. That’s what we are experiencing right now. The reality is unemployment is expected to stay at 9%+ over the next two years. We have 15M unemployed folks out there and the average time spent on unemployment is 7+ months. So, it’s clear that we need to offer up more advice on how to find work.
TELL US: What’s the BEST and/or WORST piece of advice you’ve gotten or given in the last year?
I invite all our readers to post your thoughts below. We want to see if there are any advice trends that are working, or NOT working. Your input is valuable. Your comments will be used to help millions of Americans. So please, consider taking just a moment or two to share your thoughts. In doing so, you’ll be helping all those unemployed folks around you improve their chances of getting hired.
