How long should you wait before following up (to see the progress of your potential employment) after an interview? I was told “we expect to follow up soon.”

We expect to follow up soon could mean anything. It sounds like a form letter response to me and not necessarily good news or bad news. Maybe they are still interviewing candidates. Maybe they are discussing the top 2 or 3 as a group. You might be in that top 2 or 3 and you might not be but they can't give you a reply until the decision has been made who it is they want to either interview again or hire.
Hope this helps!
